“A family wants a master suite over their 2 car garage.”

This is my favorite one! Last one I was at added a drop-ladder down to the garage, and was connected to the kitchen. All the important stuff right nearby, with the rest of the family safely far away.

I hope this person doesn’t have a HOA.

Oh, a handicap bathroom! Those can be fun.

I have a neighbor who put in plans for approval to make a mother in law suite last year, but money issues put a hold on those plans. He got back to me last month for approval of new plans with the HOA, and I approved them, but now he’s saying they may be on hold again.

The bigger the home project, the more likely clients are to have hiccups.

A former employer had a big problem trying to retrofit an ADA compliant shower into the 19th century warehouse we used as our offices (we had a decent amount of cyclists so adding a shower would have made sense) . After a whole lot of back and forth, they decided it couldn’t be made to fit where in needed to go (it seemed like a big space, but apparently not big enough ), so the project was dropped.

It ’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get it done, especially given that we didn’t have anyone who’d need a shower that big, but obviously if you let people start cutting corners, you are either going to end up with handicapped individuals either getting stuck with facilities that don’t meet their needs, or worse, not hired in the first place to avoid that inconvenience.

That’s great that you’re building a client base of your own.

Can i ask about liability? I’m considering taking a side job or two- not arch but more furniture /ID and I’m concerned about limiting liability and billing of time.

You’ll appreciate the job(s) that’s been ongoing in my neighborhood.

Old office/ coffee house

A new micro brewery opened a coffee house, brew beer & brew coffee I guess. From what I heard they left paying gigs at a church to start a brewery.

Anyway, they bought out the construction company office / house and it became the coffee house.

Construction company moved down the block and able to flex their design and carpentry skills and buy a house down the street and fix it all up.

New construction office  and pretty sure the yellow neighbors had enough, put up for sale and bought them out too

Private and public are different things. In a public or commercial place, when you do renovations on an old building, that’s when you are required to make things ADA compliant and the requirements for that are clearly spelled out and rather restrictive (which is good; they have to be) . Of course, t here are exemptions for certain situations . It can be really tough to meet modern codes in an old building built at a time  when you didn’t keep handicapped people around long before they died.

Now, a private home is a different matter. I built my house the way I wanted it. I remember I had some people over who were versed in the building requirements, and they told me that the builder hadn’t made my shower complaint with the standards of Universal Design. I responded that they were correct. The builder did it the way I told him to so that it works for me and my budget.
